Today, many societal problems are wicked. But what does it really take for problems to be wicked? Here are four answers:

These are problems that are difficult to define and often lack obvious solutions. It may be a problem that multiple actors in society have acknowledged exists and have since tried to solve - but that we are still struggling with.

No, not necessarily. It's hard to assess whether the post-World War II recovery was more 'wicked' than the Cold War or today's fight against the climate crisis. And it's actually not a question that INVI spends a lot of time on. Instead, we want to assess today's problems against each other.

It could be improving public health, getting more people into the labor market, helping the socially disadvantaged, boosting productivity, tackling unhappiness among young people or, on a larger scale, tackling the climate crisis. INVI has embarked on a model that measures the complexity - or 'wickedness', if you will - of problems to give us a language for which problems are tame and wicked.

You can never completely solve a wicked problem. That's often what makes it wicked. But you can tackle it with both new and old tools. INVI's job is to custom tools that community groups can use to tackle wicked problems.

Do you deal with wild problems? Then you can help make a huge difference to the work of think tank INVI. INVI is currently seeking members for our Policy Insights Panel (PIP) - a community of over 1000 policy entrepreneurs.
That's why we want to hear from you if you face wicked problems on a daily basis. You may be employed in the civil service, a political party, an interest organization, an NGO, the funding world, a private company or somewhere entirely different. We're looking for people from all parts of the country, representing different disciplines and organizations.
Founder
Sigge Winther Nielsen is CEO of INVI. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen and has lived in the US for several years as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, New York and University of California, Berkeley. In 2021, he published the book Entreprenørstaten.
Sigge has previously hosted DR2's news show Deadline and been a political analyst at Dagbladet Politiken. He has also worked as CEO of Djøf and as a civil servant in the Ministry of Finance.
